Park for free in Milan
Milan, the city of fashion. One of the most famous and frequently visited cities in Italy, located in the northwest very close to the Swiss border, it is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or as a stop on your road trip through Italy. Just like other big European cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, the traffic in Milan is crazy... Don't worry! You only need a few small tips to succeed on your road trip through Milan.
How to park for free in Milan and other useful tips
As is the case in almost all cities in Italy, the streets of Milan are a museum in and of themselves; so you will need to get around fast if you want to see everything that has made this Italian city an icon for tourism, and there's nothing better than the freedom and comfort that a rental car provides. Pay attention, because we're going to give you the best tips for parking in the city if you plan on travelling around Milan by car.
ZTL zones: What are they?
ZTL zones are the metered parking zones. In the case of Milan, it's important for you to know that free parking is only available in the white zones, while the yellow zones are limited to residents, and the blue zones require payment.
Free parking or the white zones are found throughout the metropolitan areas of Milan, with a few exceptions: the historic centre, La Cerchio dei Bastioni, La Cerchio Filoviaria, Fiera Milano, San Siro and Zona Bicocca. In these places you'll have to pay the blue zone rates if you want to park. The price per hour is approximately €1.20. However, you should know that with a bit of luck, you'll be able to find white zone parking spaces on the nearby streets. You need to have patience and good reflexes.
Park and Ride, a great option
Other options when it comes to parking and saving a bit of time are the Park and Ride car parks. It's important to know that they are usually located on the outskirts of the city or in less central areas, but they are well-connected to the centre by means of public transport. These new car parks are meant to decongest cities and reduce pollution in big cities.
Here are some free parking areas connected to the city centre.
-
Car parks near cemeteries. This is the case of the Monumentale, Baggio and Lambrate cemeteries. In this area you'll find numerous white zone parking spaces. They are unguarded, but free and without time limits.
-
Parking spaces near the train stations. The same thing occurs as with the parking near cemeteries: these areas have a lot of traffic with free parking zones: They're not too far from the city centre and the main attractions. Some examples are the Lambrate Station and the Milan Central Station.
-
The free parking spaces located in the Rho Fiera area. Although there are also paid spaces, pay attention to the free zone of Via Zara, near the entrance of Rho Fiera and in viale del cargo 1. You can also park in the direction of Mazzo di Rho. Finally, on via Risorgimento, you'll find a free car park with surveillance that has 600 parking spaces. An area from which you can reach the city centre by metro.
