The acclaimed series Game of Thrones based on the saga ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R. Martin have filmed a large number of scenes around Spain, and so we have prepared a car route that no self-respecting fan should miss.
So far there have been 6 seasons of Game of Thrones, with filming of the 7th season scheduled on location in Spain during October and November of 2016.
If you're a fan of the series and consider yourself a Game of Thrones geek, we invite you to take your rental car and get ready to visit a selection of destinations around Spain that will leave you breathless. You can get to know first-hand the locations where the dynasty experiences many struggles, intrigues and betrayals which took place between Baratheon, Lannister, Targaryen and Stark, among others, to seize power of the Iron Throne.
Our car rental journey starts in the town of Zumaya, located in Guipuzcoa, where part of the 7th season will be filmed. The main setting is the landscape of “Flysch” on the Itzurun Beach. The question that remains unanswered is whether this geological phenomenon on the Cantabrian coast is the beach where Daenerys lands or if on the contrary, a scene of the ‘Isla del Hierro’ (the ‘Iron Islands’).
We continue on our route enjoying the beautiful landscapes of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a small island located in Bermeo, Vizcaya. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge over which there is an old chapel dating from the 10th century. This marvel of nature will be the location where two main characters of Game of Thrones meet and will attract great attention during the seventh season.
Bardenas, located in Navarra, is a stunning natural scenery of eroded ground that has been chosen by the producers as the ideal location for filming scenes of Dothraki Sea. This natural area was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2000, offering amazing shapes to remind us of Sci-Fi & Fantasy films.
