1. Excursion to Buitrago de Lozoya
The younger members of the family will feel like they are in a fairy tale in this medieval town. It is one of the best-conserved and maintained on mainland Spain. Buitrago de Lozoya is protected by a 9 metre wall, from where you can contemplate the town and its surroundings. We cannot forget to mention its castle, giving the town even more of a special feel. 2. Excursion to San Martín de Valdeiglesias
Very close to the capital, about 75 kilometres away, you will find the Enchanted Forest (Bosque Encantado). Both adults and children will love this. There are more than 300 tree and plant sculptures with all imaginable shapes and forms. The park also has various bonsais and cactus expositions, walking paths with fountains, labyrinths and even a small waterfall. It is suitable for the whole family, including dogs. Entrance costs 11€ for adults and 8€ for children under 12.
A stroll through the Enchanted Forest can be complimented with a visit to San Martín castle, which is surrounded by natural beauty like the Picadas dam and the San Juan reservoir. A great area to have a fun family weekend.
3. Excursion to Hoces del Duratón
The 100-meter-deep canyon that the Duraton River has sculpted over many years is a treasure of nature. You can park rental vehicle/ minivan and navigate its waters by renting a canoe. Another of the main attractions of the Parque Natural del río Duratón ( Natural Park of the Duraton River ) is its colony of more than 500 griffon vultures. You can also see eagles or hawks easily. Not only the landscape will leave you speechless, but you can also enjoy a practical history class. There is a beautiful Romanesque hermitage and caves with engravings from centuries ago.
4. Excursion to Sierra de Gredos
The area of the Sierra de Gredos is another interesting minivan route for nature lovers. This mountainous formation that separates the Tajo and Douro rivers offers dozens of walking routes suitable for all levels of fitness. Its landscapes are impressive, with a variety of impressive vegetation and animals. One of the most representative animals is the Gredos goat.
