Family road trip from Barcelona to the Monasterio de Piedra
Only 416 kilometers, over 3 hours, separate Barcelona from the Monasterio de Piedra. Between one and the other, there are many interesting spots where you can enjoy a stopover along the way and discover hidden places and unknown landscapes of northern Spain.
Excursion to the National Park of Aigüestortes and Lake of San Mauricio
The first stop on our route from Barcelona to Monasterio de Piedra is the National Park of Aigüestortes, an impressive protected natural area located in the province of Lleida, just 262 kilometers from Barcelona.
You can get in directly through the road, which takes you to the park's gates, we recommend you to access through the gates of Espot in Valls d'Àneu. Its more than 105 kilometers of mountains, 200 lakes, rivers and waterfalls make it the ideal setting for children to appreciate the value of nature and introduce them to adventure.
Stop at the lake of Sant Mauricio, located at the foot of Els Encantats peaks, a landscape typical of the Catalan Pyrenees, and enjoy the Romanesque churches of the Boí Valley. You can enjoy a route from the Ratera waterfall on the banks of the lake and sleep in the midst of nature in the Valls d'Àneu to fully enjoy this area of the Lleida Pyrenees before continuing with your route . A good plan with children in the Aigüestortes National Park is to go kayaking and camping in permitted natural areas.
Huesca and the National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido
Keep on your driving route to the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, in Huesca. You can visit the Ordesa canyon with children, as it is suitable for all audiences. In it, you will discover green meadows, jumping rivers and mountain forests in the heart of the Pyrenees. Be sure to visit the most famous waterfall of all, called the Cola de Caballo. Take the opportunity to visit places like Aínsa and especially the Lacuniacha park, which is great for children to learn much more about the fauna of Huesca.
Heading to the Natural Park of Monasterio de Piedra
Keep going for 180 kilometers to our next stop, the Natural Park of Monasterio de Piedra, in Zaragoza. This park is one of the most sought-after natural spaces in Spain and it is not surprising, its plant exuberance will not disappoint you. You can drive through its marked trails along 5km, where you can enjoy the great scenic beauty that the Río Piedra shows in its path, between rivulets, caves and waterfalls. Take the opportunity to visit the Monasterio de Piedra, (Stone Monastery) where you can contemplate eight centuries of history; its cloister is perfect to enjoy the most interesting religious architecture. A good plan with children is to visit the fish fauna interpretation center and witness a falconry exhibition where they can see owls, owls or eagles among others.
Gadgets to enjoy eating outdoors
Remember to always carry stackable plates and cups to make the most of your available space. A briefcase with kitchen utensils will help you keep in order your knives, skimmers, trenches and the like. Pay attention to some useful objects such as a portable coffee maker that serves 10 cups and works with propane, and even an inflatable sink with 10 liters capacity, which will allow you to scrub your dishes.
